Guardian Home Program

Our guardian home program helps us expand our breeding program, enables our parent dogs lives a full life as a beloved family pet, a family receives a “pick of the litter” puppy at an extremely discounted price. It functions similar to co-ownership at first, and once the dog is retired from breeding, the guardian home gets full ownership of the dog.

We believe it is imperative for our breeding program that all of our mama and papa dogs are loved and cared for in loving home as pets, as part of the family. We know that the more our mamas are loved and cared for responsibly in a loving home, the more she can help nurture the behaviors and dispositions of a family pet while she is raising her puppies for 8 weeks until puppies go home to their own families.

Benefits of a Guardian Home Program:

The guardian puppy will have some of the best qualities of the breed - we want our guardian dogs to be healthy and have great temperaments.

Once a guardian family is identified through an approved application and some conversations with Sarah here at Daisy Mountain Doodles, a future mama or papa puppy/dog will be placed in their home at an extremely discounted rate/holding fee of $500 under a guardian home contract.

There will also be some monetary compensation for the guardian family when the dog is used for breeding purposes.

Once the contract is complete, then the mama/papa will get spayed/neutered by the breeder and the guardian family becomes the sole owner of the dog.

Requirements for the Guardian Home Program:

Guardian families must maintain open communication with us during the contract period. We will make sure to clearly communicate and work with you as well. This is very important to the whole process.

Guardian families must have prior dog experience, be willing and know how to train, including crate training, house manners, and obedience training. Guardian family must keep socialization a priority. Guardian must work with our recommended trainer, Dianne Keck with NeuroDog Training at least monthly for the first 6 months, at the guardian’s cost.

Guardian families must live within an hour of Peoria for females, and a half hour for males. Guardians must have a fenced yard. Guardians must not plan to move out of AZ for up to 6 years.

Guardian families must be willing to drive to our house when dog is needed for breeding purposes.

The Guardian must care for the puppy responsibly, making sure puppy is up to date on all veterinary health needs, vaccination, deworming, etc, including emergencies. We will financially cover all breeding related vet costs.

Guardian families must be responsible for keeping the dog’s coat maintained with regular bushing at home a couple times a week and professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

Guardian families must be willing to send quality photos and videos to Sarah to use on social media and online periodically. We love showing off our amazing mamas and papas in their homes!!!

  • Guardian families will help us keep track of heat cycles, and keep us informed on health related issues and statuses. Also, it is of absolute importance to keep females away from intact males while in heat, and will not allow any unapproved mating.

When a female goes into heat, and we have a planned breeding (typically around 18-24 months - depending on number of previous heat cycles, etc), Guardian family will transport the female to our home or a vet office 1-3 times for breeding. Guardian is expected to drive our mama, but we will try our hardest to accommodate schedules.

Guardian family will help transport pregnant female to the vet for ultrasound (35 days after breeding) and X-ray (55 days after breeding).

When the female is close to her due date (63 days after breeding), Guardian family will transport the female to our home a week before she is due, to help her settle in and nest in her whelping box. Female will stay with us for 8 weeks to be with her puppies, then guardian family can come pick her up. Guardian families can visit after the pups once the puppies are 4 weeks old.

Guardian families will get compensated for each pregnancy/whelping. After 4 litters, the female will get spayed then Guardian family becomes the sole owner of their dog!

  • Guardian families will help keep us informed on health related issues and statuses.

Guardian families must keep away the male from all intact females. There can be absolutely no unapproved breedings.

When a male is needed for breeding, guardian family will bring the male dog 1 - 3 times within a week. Guardian must drive the Guardian dog to the breeding location (Sarah’s house or a vet office)

Guardian families will get compensated for each time the male is used for breeding. Males will be used up to 6 years old, and once contract terms are complete, male will get neutered the Guardian family becomes the sole owner of their dog!

  • Practically, there are 3 general phases for guardian families with our mamas. The first stage is mostly just raising and training a puppy like normal, keeping her healthy, and of course loving her and making her a part of your life and family. Our big ask here at Daisy Mountain Doodles is that the family spends time training, including obedience training, house manner training, socialization training, and desensitization training, especially a pup’s first year. This takes time but it will SIGNIFICANTLY help set your puppy for success in her life, and will allow you to take her through your life as a true companion instead of needing to “manage” her. We will interact with you about health testing around 4-5 months, 12-13 months, and at 2 years old. Your girl may have 1-3 heats during this time.

The second stage, at around 16-24 months, depending on health testing, we will start breeding the female once she enters into a heat cycle. We may ask you bring her for a couple progesterone tests, and then 1-3 times for breeding. Mama will go home to you for around 2 months while pregnant, then come to us for around 2 months while whelping and raising her pups. After raising her pups, then mama returns to you for around 2-6 months until she goes into heat again and depending of a variety of factors, she may get bred again, or skipped.

The third stage, at about 4-5 years old, and once she’s done have her litters with us, is getting her spayed. After she is spayed and the contract is complete, she is with you exclusively for the rest of her life as your companion!
