A Little About the Goldendoodle Breed

A Goldendoodle is a combination of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. This can be a great temperament combo because we can combine the Golden’s affability and joy to meet everyone (they can be best friends with a brick wall), with the Poodle’s intelligence, drive to please, trainability, low to very low non-shed coats. So goldendoodles are typically characterized as happy, friendly, loyal, smart, and easy to train. They can be great for a variety of types of families and individuals - they are typically great with young kids, and with training, can be great for busy young families. They can also be great adventure buddies and loyal companions for folks in all life stages. Goldendoodles can also be outgoing and eager to be in new situations and meet new folks, but they also love just “being with their people”hanging on the couch.

Because of their low-non shed coats, they can be great for families and individuals with mild to moderate allergies. Because of their furnishings (the fluffiness around their muzzle, eyebrows, and legs), they have hair on their coat instead of fur. Because of this, goldendoodles can be considered moderate to high maintenance for grooming. They will need routine brushing and combing by their owners, plus professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Their coat characteristics also give them their great “teddy bear” look that we love.

Goldendoodles are characterized as extremely smart. Because of this, it is important to fill their need for mental stimulation and give them training and activities. They can be a little more forgiving if folks don’t train compared to some other breeds, but if you can put the time into training, especially the first 12 months, they can dogs that can enjoy all aspects of your life because of their good and trained behavior.

One more characteristic to note is that goldendoodles are extremely social animals and love their family and pack. Because of this, they are great for folks who want a companion dog, and want to spend time with him/her. Goldendoodles do not necessarily work well with folks who out of the house a lot while they are left home, or would prefer a dog that can be a bit more independent. They are great with folks who want a bond with their pup and a pup that is considered a companion. Doodles also typically are great with other family dogs - and getting 2 doodles a year apart can be a great experience.
